Orchids dwelling in humid and warm climate have longer and thin leaves whereas those inhabiting in dry weather have thick leaves. There are also some species of orchids that don’t have leaves. They also don’t have the typical roots. Orchids have aerial, tuber or rhizome roots.
Orchid seeds do not have endosperm and due to this, during germination all orchids live in synergy with fungi. It can take up to 18 years for these exquisite flowers to be produced from seed. Orchids are used by people for a number of reasons. They are used in producing ancient Asian medicines, spices and perfumes. Orchids have been existing for ages. In fact, as per fossil indications, they have been present since 100 million years. The life expectancy of orchids is determined by the species. There are some species of orchids that can stay alive for as many as 100 years!
